FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Police K-9 Killed During Search for Bank RobbersPlymouth Township Police Department10/22/2008 PLYMOUTH - It is with great sadness, that the Plymouth Township Police announce the loss of one of our K-9 members. On 10/22/08 at approximately 1035 hours, a Plymouth Township Police K-9 unit responded to Lower Gwynedd Township for a report of an armed bank robbery at the Abington Bank, 800 North Bethlehem Pike, Lower Gwynedd, Pa. The K-9 team, identified as Officer Louis Layfield and K-9 Andy, deployed and were actively tracking the suspects. During the course of the apprehension K-9 Andy was fatally wounded and his handler/ partner Officer Louis Layfield sustained a gun shot to the chest. Officer Layfield was wearing a ballistic vest. Ofc. Layfield was treated and released from Mercy Suburban Hospital. Officer Layfield and K-9 Andy have been partners since January of 2005. K-9 Andy was trained as a patrol dog and was also cross trained in drug detection. K-9 Andy has made numerous apprehensions during his career and will be sadly missed. Prior to joining the Plymouth Township Police Department, K-9 Andy served as a patrol dog in Conshohocken Borough.
